Richard's intervention

After We Fell

Richard’s intervention is an ultimatum arranged by Hardin and delivered by Landon: Richard must enter rehabilitation, with Ken paying, or lose access to Tessa. Conceived as a way to shield Tessa from her father’s addiction, the plan also exposes Hardin’s willingness to manage a family crisis without her consent; its outcome remains unknown when he says he will ask Landon what happened.

Background and Stakes

Before the intervention, Tessa is worried about leaving Richard for three days. Landon had watched him during an earlier absence, and she questions what her father will do while they are away. The practical concern makes the proposed treatment immediate rather than abstract: Tessa is anxious about Richard being left without her nearby, while the prospect of rehabilitation brings its own burden.

Tessa says the rehabilitation facility is too expensive and that she is uncomfortable with Ken spending that much money on her father. She also hesitates because she and Hardin do not know for certain that Richard is an addict. Hardin rejects that uncertainty, naming Richard’s drug addiction directly and arguing that Ken might as well pay for treatment. The exchange reveals a divide between Tessa’s discomfort with accepting help and Hardin’s conviction that the danger is already clear.

Hardin’s Plan

Hardin says that he spent hours at the gym punching and kicking a bag while thinking through what to do. He settled on a binary condition: Richard could go to rehabilitation at Ken’s expense, or he would be out of Tessa’s life. Hardin presents the choice as a way to prevent Richard’s addiction from becoming Tessa’s burden, adding that he already causes her enough stress.

Rather than deliver the ultimatum himself, Hardin sends Landon to conduct the intervention. He expects that the conversation is less likely to turn violent with Landon in charge than it would be with him. The delegation is therefore both a practical judgment about the risk of confrontation and a sign of Hardin’s awareness that his own anger could make the encounter worse.

Tessa’s Exclusion and the Intervention’s Limits

Hardin admits that he feels guilty because Tessa was not included in the plan. That admission sharpens the conflict at the heart of the intervention: he is trying to protect her from the consequences of Richard’s addiction, yet he has privately decided what must happen to her father and who should impose the terms. His care does not erase the fact that he has withheld a consequential decision from her.

The intervention also sits uneasily beside Tessa’s stated need for independence in her relationship with Hardin. She has insisted that she must be able to make decisions without considering whether she has his permission, and that they should be partners and equals. In this case, Hardin’s protective intention again takes the form of acting first and informing her afterward, putting his judgment ahead of her participation.

Outcome and Significance

Hardin expects to contact Landon as soon as they land to learn how the intervention went. He hopes Richard agreed to rehabilitation, but the scene provides no confirmation that Richard accepted, entered treatment, or was cut off from Tessa. Tessa says she needs time to think about the proposed arrangement, leaving both the practical result and her response unresolved.

The episode distinguishes the plan’s motive from its method. Hardin wants to stop Richard’s addiction from placing more strain on Tessa, and he tries to reduce the chance of violence by choosing Landon as intermediary. Yet the ultimatum makes access to Tessa the leverage, while her absence from the decision repeats the very imbalance she has asked Hardin to change.
